🌸 Angie Thomas- The Hate U Give-Book Review 🌸

The Hate U Give is written by Angie Thomas and it is her debut novel. This is a short spoiler-free review of well written, easy to read book!

What it’s about- The book is about a black girl named Starr who lives her two brothers Seven and Sekani and her mum and dad in a very run down neighborhood.  She goes to a school in the suburbs dominated by white-middle class teenagers where she feels out of place. Starr witnesses her best friend get shot by the police for no reason (this isn’t a spoiler). His death becomes a national headline and for all the wrong reasons. He gets called a drug dealer and a thug and fake stories regarding his death emerge but only Starr knows the truth. This book is about how Starr reacts to what she has witnessed and whether or not she decides to speak out. This book refers to Tupac multiple times, touches on the importance of family,  friendship, and romantic issues.

Why it’s important- This book inspired by the “Black Lives Matter” movement and the current problem with police brutality. Not only does this book go into the shootings of unarmed black people by police officers but it also goes into racial injustice and stereotypes.  This book is important because it is relatable. If you are unaware of the racial injustice in America then this book will educate you on it.  This book is Fiction, but as I mentioned before it inspired by true stories and ongoing problems and that is why I think it is so important for you to read.  Books such as The Hate U Give need to exist because they are so important because of the political and social message it sends.

How it makes you feel- This book will make you feel uncomfortable but that is because it is reflecting what is happening in real life. This book made me emotional and angry. Some of the characters’ ignorance is extremely frustrating.  This heart-wrenching book will make you feel upset about how some people are being treated in the world. Whilst this book has a very serious subject matter, this is still a humorous book and there were quite a few parts of it that made me laugh!

Favourite Quotes-

“What’s the point of having a voice if you’re gonna be silent in those moments you shouldn’t be?”

“Sometimes you can do everything right and things will still go wrong. The key is to never stop doing right.”

What I have written does not give this book justice, it is so important that you give it a read!!

Thanks xx
